About 300,000 Frigidaire mini fridges have been recalled nationwide, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday. Sold exclusively at Target, the products were pulled from shelves following six reports of them catching fire, causing property damage and posing a burn hazard. This recall expands on another Frigidaire mini fridge recall from last July, affecting about 634,000 units.
The recalled products, produced by Curtis International, can be identified with the following:
- Product description:Frigidaire six-can mini fridge in red
- Model number:EFMIS121
- Serial numbers:between A2001 and A2310
Frigidaire
The initial recall from July included additional Frigidaire mini fridges, with the following product details:
- Model number: EFMIS129; serial numbers: between A2001 and A2308 (if model number is “EFMIS129-B” or EFMIS129-C”, it is not included in this recall)
- Model number: EFMIS137; serial numbers: between A2001 and A2312
- Model number: EFMIS149; serial numbers: between A2001 and A2308
- Model number: EFMIS175; serial numbers: between A2001 and A2310
These items were sold nationwide at additional retailers, including Walmart and Amazon, and caused complaints. There were at least 26 reports of the mini fridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating, and catching fire, resulting in property damages totaling than $700,000. Two consumers also reported smoke inhalation injuries.
If you have a recalled mini fridge, stop using it and register for a refund on the Curtis International website. The CPSC is also urging consumers to unplug the product, cut the power cord, and write “Recall” in permanent marker on the front door of the unit—then dispose of it.
